In Puerto Salaverry, a small coastal district of Trujillo – La Libertad, Jarkay was born, a non-profit organization that seeks to bring hope and opportunities through sports and education.
Our name means “protection”, and that is exactly what we want for every child, young person, and adult who is part of our community: to protect their dreams, help them grow with new tools, and discover their full potential.
♂️ Surfing as a way of life
One of our main projects is teaching surfing, a sport that is part of the identity of northern Peru and that inspires discipline, confidence, and love for nature. At the moment, we have 20 to 25 children full of energy and eager to learn – children who see in the ocean not only waves, but also opportunities to dream big.
However, our organization faces a major challenge: we do not have the proper surfboards. Right now, we have to rent them, which limits both practice and learning. That is why we have launched a fundraising campaign, with the goal of acquiring our own surfboards, so that the children can use them regularly and have free and constant access to this sport.
Beyond sports: education for life
At Jarkay, we believe that real change goes beyond sports. That is why we also offer free English classes for children, youth, and adults, both in the community of Las Brisas and at the home of Shegu, the founder of the organization.
English has become an essential tool to open doors to new opportunities – in work, in education, and in everyday life. For us, every class is a seed of the future: a space where our students not only learn a language, but also gain confidence, motivation, and build friendships.
