On January 21st, Debbie and Ian were struck by a car as they were going to a boy scout meeting in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. The vehicle hit both of them and then slammed into the family van destroying it. Both were thrown a distance and suffered severe injuries requiring them to be taken to a Trauma Hospital. The next day, they were transferred to separate hospitals in Philadelphia for advanced care. Debbie is currently at Jefferson Hospital in center city, and Ian is at St. Christopher's Pediatric hospital. Both have a long, painful road to recovery ahead.
Debbie's injuries include a broken nose, ankle and arm and, more seriously, broken vertebrae in her spine. 12 hours of surgery already with more scheduled as soon as she can handle it. Although she has positive thoughts, the family is preparing for an extended recovery.
Ian suffered a tibial fracture in his leg, a clavicle fracture, four broken ribs (one piercing his liver), and a severe laceration on his face. Ian also suffered a small vertebrae fracture. He was in surgery for 4 hours and will require some facial surgery as well in the future. His hockey seasons are over for this year but we are confidant his love and desire for the game will get him back out there for his senior year.
This is one of the strongest families you could ever meet. The boys put all their passion into their love of hockey and scouting, and the parents give everything they have to provide it for them. Their love and support for each other thru good times and bad is a remarkable gift and should be an example for everyone. But this is going to be a test for even them. This is going to be the biggest emotional and financial challenge they have had to face. Let's help them face it.
