Fundraiser for Steven’s E-Assist Mobility Bicycle
We are so humbled and moved by the generosity of so many people supporting this fundraiser. We believe we have raised enough money now to make the purchase!!! So we offer our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported!! So we are putting this fundraiser on PAUSE until we finalize all purchase arrangements. We've gone ahead and made a down payment on the e-assist mobility bicycle; and will have a final price once shipping arrangements are finalized. As many of you know, Steven lives with epilepsy, autism, severe cognitive delays, and speech impairment, among other challenges. This e-assist mobility bicycle will be an incredible and life-enhancing gift for him.
Why We’re Fundraising
Last summer, we had the opportunity to borrow an e-assist mobility bicycle. Although the unit was more than 15 years old, it allowed us to see just how much Steven loved riding. This past fall, we were able to try a brand-new model and immediately recognized the benefits of the many advancements—and how much joy and freedom it would bring to Steven.
Our Goal
These bicycles are highly specialized and are designed and built in Holland. Once imported to Canada, they cost approximately $25,000 CAD. We have received a quote from Hamilton Trike, the exclusive distributor of these bicycles in Ontario.
This specialized mobility device will allow us to:
- Take Steven biking daily again and travel longer distances
- Enable support workers and family members to take Steven out for rides
- Bring the bicycle with us on holidays to explore more places together
- Enjoy biking as a family once again
Most importantly, it will give Steven the opportunity to explore, experience, and enjoy cycling throughout the summer.
Why This Matters
With all of Steven’s challenges, we are always searching for healthy, meaningful activities that bring him joy. Experiencing the mobility bicycle was truly life-changing for him. Steven wanted to go biking every day—sometimes twice a day. He smiled, laughed, and waved to neighbours as he rode along. He felt free, confident, and proud.
When we had to return the borrowed bicycle, Steven continued to ask for rides using his communication device, saying “bicycle,” “motorcycle,” and “electric wheelchair,” doing his best to describe the experience he loved so much.
Although Steven is vulnerable to seizures and requires 24/7 care, we discovered that riding the mobility bicycle is a safe and enriching activity we can enjoy together as a family.
With Gratitude
Thank you for taking the time to read Steven’s story and for supporting this next chapter in his life.
With love and gratitude,
Irene & Scott
