My name is Mia, and I am looking to raise funds to help my parents with their sudden move.
Full back story (scroll to the bottom for a summary):
Back in 2008, my little sister was born. She was born at 26 weeks, weighing in at 2 lbs 3 oz. She was placed in a specialized hospital in Orlando for premature babies, which as you can imagine, costs tons of money. She had to stay there for about 2 months before we could take her home. At the same time, my parents were losing pay and benefits because of the 2008 housing crash. My dad's paychecks began getting garnished, debt collectors harassed us every day, and my parents ultimately had their house foreclosed on.
Just before the bank took the house, my parents were scrambling to find us a new place to live. They had zero credit, little money, and two children to take care of. One day, my dad was able to find a place. The landlady of the home talked to my dad, and she recognized our last name: Hollenback. She said that my dad's great-grandmother was the first female doctor in Brevard County and took good care of her. So, she made my dad a deal. She would rent us a 3 bed, 2 bath house just on the county border for $950/month. So, we moved in immediately, just before the bank placed a large lock on our old home's front door. Keep in mind, it's 2008, so price for rent was nothing like it is today (and wages have stayed the same).
Fast forward a few years, our land lady passes away. We discovered that, in her will, she wished that the rent would not be raised on my parents. So, for 12 years, they've lived in that house for $950/month. My parents have been barely getting by this whole time, as both have working-class jobs and no college education. On top of that, we always have car troubles, so a lot of money goes into repairs for the cars and appliances in the home.
Now, there is a new landlord, and she's decided that she is going to sell the house. They were told to be out by December 1st. Now that the housing market is completely wild in my hometown (Cocoa, FL), the average price to rent a 2 bed 1 bath apartment is at least $1600.
I have a new full-time job, so I have taken some of the financial burdens off of my parents by getting my own car insurance policy and phone plan. I am also helping them find a new phone plan and ditch cable to save some money every month. However, I am slowly losing hope in finding them a comfy place to live that is also affordable. If I'm being honest, I feel desperate. I am so afraid of my family becoming houseless, and I don't want that for my parents, who have worked so hard their whole life... and I DEFINITELY don't want my little sister (she's 14) to go through that.
So, I've laid it all out and I am so appreciative if you have taken the time to read my family's story. Please, if you can, share this with your network, with your friends, family, etc. Every single penny is appreciated and will go toward moving costs and rent for the first couple of months so my parents can get on their feet after landing in a new living situation.
Thank you so so much for your time.
TLDR; My family is being forced out of their rent-controlled housing because the new landlord is selling the house. They've been paying $950/month; now, even smaller apartments cost $1,600+/month. My parents are both employed full-time, and my sister is in high school. They are the hardest-working people I know and don't get paid nearly as much as they should. Because they have virtually no savings and this decision is sudden, we are finding it hard to find someplace within their budget, let alone have enough money to pay the deposit + first month's rent simultaneously. That's at least 3k, not including a moving truck rental and other costs associated with moving. On top of this, we are grieving the loss of my grandfather, who we lost this past weekend suddenly. I am doing my best to take the financial burden off of my parents, but I also have virtually no savings. If you can donate even $1, we would appreciate your help during this challenging time.
All my best,
Mia
