In 2022, after deep reflection and careful planning, I made the life-changing decision to immigrate to Canada. It was not a choice I took lightly—I even traveled to Canada for an interview before committing. When I was offered the job, I began a long and difficult process that took over a year to complete. I had to navigate strict administrative hurdles in both countries, sell my home of nearly 20 years, and leave everything behind, starting over with just two suitcases.

Thankfully, I wasn’t entirely alone. My sister Tracy and her family became my rock, supporting me every step of the way. My mother, unwavering in her belief in me, reminded me that I could succeed. Their encouragement gave me the strength to push forward and adapt to this new chapter.

But sometimes, no matter how much effort you put in, circumstances change beyond your control. After 10 months in Canada, immigration policies shifted, making it nearly impossible for me to secure permanent residency. Despite all I have done to build a life here, I now have no choice but to return to South Africa.

Starting over—again—is a challenge I never imagined facing twice in such a short time. With Tracy and Dave’s help, I have saved every cent I could, and I do have a small cushion to ease the transition. But the reality is, rebuilding from scratch is expensive, and pride alone won’t pay the bills.
