Help for Kittens Dumped on a Rubbish Tip - Morocco

Donation protected

Every year hundreds of young kittens are dumped on a rubbish tip in Azemmour, Morocco and left to their plight - sadly many of them die. For years Fatima, a local woman, has tried to take care of them, requesting food from local fish sellers, making shelters out of cardboard boxes, and doing whatever she can to protect them. Sadly there's very little that can be done to protect vulnerable kittens against the diseases that run rife in an unchecked cat population. Kitten season 2019 saw an unprecedented number of abandoned kittens at the dump. Fatima was totally overwhelmed and in desperation turned to ERHAM, a small local charity who had recently started a  sterilisation programme in Azemmour and asked for help.  ERHAM in Arabic means 'take pity' and it was exactly what we needed to do.

We started by cleaning the area, laying a 3x3 meter concrete slab with a tiled area for food, thereby creating 'Kitten  City'. We also helped by supplying nourishing wet food for the kittens, croquettes for the cats and medicine for the poorly ones. Since then, 2 permanent cat shelters have been added to 'Kitten City' and where possible we have rescued, vaccinated, neutered and re-released (sometimes re-homed) kittens in Morocco and have also transported 6 teenage cats, including 'Beauty' our amazing blind boy to the UK. The ERHAM road trip was a truly wonderful adventure!

During lockdown we had to 'step up' further when local cafes and restaurants were forced to close, denying the street animals their usual source of food and risking starvation on the streets. We very quickly organised a street feeding team, and supplied the street cats and dogs with supplementary food for 6 months.

This additional work takes a toll on our finances which in turn reduces the number of sterilisations we can fund - the only real solution to the problem. This appeal is for help with funding for our work in 2021 - especially our desperately needed project at the rubbish tip. If we continue to sterilise as many cats as possible, educate local people re animal welfare , vaccinate incoming kittens at the dump and support them with nourishing food, we can really help to stop the suffering.  Please donate if you can - we will always keep you updated with our projects.
