Help Alfonso Get Himself Back on His Feet

Donation protected
I'm initiating this fundraiser as a call for support for our friend Alfonso Sosa Cordero. He tragically just had another incapacitating fall that will put him out of commission for many months, unable to do what he most loves in life: being active, productive and able to be helpful to friends and family. At a moment’s notice, he would help any one of us. Now it is our opportunity to help him during this difficult time.

Short Story:

In April, Alfonso had a complete tear of his left patellar tendon, which needed extensive reconstructive surgery, leading to a total knee replacement. He was recovering from this first knee surgery when he tragically fell down several steps in late August, landing hard on his right shoulder and ribs. Alfonso is now in a care facility working on healing FIVE broken ribs, a punctured lung and a shoulder separation. He is in a lot of pain and feeling pretty low. He will be laid up for many months, unable to keep up his businesses to earn the income needed to cover his expenses during this time.

If you are able, any donation is welcome. Besides the financial support to help lessen Alfonso's stress and burden during this time of being out of commission, he would also greatly benefit from and appreciate your loving thoughts and prayers for his healing on all levels. I know he will be so grateful and honored to know you are thinking of him.

The Details:

On Wednesday, August 24, as Alfonso was navigating down the stairs to his room, already compromised because his knee was in a locked brace, he tripped with his crutch and fell down half a flight of stairs. He was home alone but fortunately was able to call 911 himself and was taken to the hospital with five broken ribs, a right lung puncture, and a right shoulder/collar bone separation. He spent 6 days in the hospital on morphine, which only slightly lessened the intense pain he felt with every breath, cough or movement. All of this would have been bad enough on its own, but it was made all the worse as it came on top of him still recovering from another recent debilitating injury.

Four months prior, he had slipped on wet tiles in Brazil and completely tore his left patellar tendon. He had to be medically evacuated back to California for extensive reconstructive surgery and was in the middle of a painfully slow rehab preparing for a full knee replacement in early 2023. He was just getting back to being able to get around on his own with his knee brace and crutch and was starting to be more active again in his life. He was re-establishing his boat repair business and building back up his medical supply business, which had been hurt during the pandemic.

Now, as of August 30, he's being cared for in a care facility in San Rafael, CA. His shoulder is stabilized, but his fractured ribs are still causing unbearable pain. He is going to remain there until at least September 12, so he can rest, have his pain managed, and get physical and occupational therapy until he's able to safely return home to begin slowly and carefully resuming his life and daily activities.

With the long recovery ahead, he’ll likely be laid up, unable to fully maintain his businesses to cover his expenses, until at least Spring of 2023. In addition, he fears recovering from these current upper body injuries may delay his knee replacement, which will keep him out of commission even longer. As you can imagine, his morale has taken a hard hit with this accident on top of the knee injury. I've known him for a long time and have never seen him so low in spirits, devastated and in despair.

He could really use the support, love and prayers of his friends, family and community at this most critical time. I thank you - from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of Alfonso's heart - for your loving thoughts, prayers and support.

A Week Earlier - finally able to get himself to and from the ground for boat-towing prep with his knee still healing in his brace.
