Hi my name is Emily Franco. I live in the United States But I was born and raised in Scotland and I bring my Scottish shenanigans wherever I go.

For the past three weeks I have been on the border of Poland and Ukraine volunteering in animal rescuing. While in the beginning I intended to work with already established charity groups, I very quickly became an independent rescuer as I found out the charities I was working with were pocketing money, reselling donated supplies, and choosing not to rescue senior and disabled dogs.

My experience is with dog boarding, special needs dog rescue, dog hospice care, and I do not want a dog or cat that is disabled or senior to be forgotten in the back of a shelter because they are seen as unprofitable or unadoptable. Whether the animal is blind, paralyzed, deaf, two legged, or any combination of needs I believe they all deserve to be washed, brushed, fed, warm, and given affection as much as any other dog. I know the feeling of not being wanted or feeling unloved during the darkest moments in my life and this is why I choose to rescue these animals as I will not let them simply be forgotten.

I have funded all the rescue work by myself up until this point with collaboration of other independent rescuers and humanitarians. As much money of my own that I've spent; its only a small dent in the grand scheme and now I want to try and build a shelter and warehouse in Dnipro. The space would be for both animal and humanitarian aid, and instead of having to drive 10 hours through the border every day this will allow me to be more centralized. SO when more animals are taken from the war zones they will have a safe place to be looked after. Bringing dogs over the border to Poland is becoming less of an option too as the shelters are filling up. I am estimating the shelter will be able to accommodate 20-30 dogs at a time.

The places I have rescued from so far are: Lviv, Lutsk, and near Kiev. As I have become more familiar with the country of Ukraine I am willing to travel into any zone for animal rescue upon the set up of the shelter. With the new shelter also I will set up an Instagram page to track the rescue of the animals with also sharing what purchases are made with the public. If I am unable to reach the funding goal for a new shelter my intent with any donation will be to put it to use at facilities that are already available in Poland and Ukraine with those independent rescues I trust. To lend trust back to the donators I will have posts keeping transparency of where the donated funds are used no matter the results.

For the Ukrainian Pet Owners and the deeply devastated furry loved ones lost during the war.
