Support Wasila: Help Me Stay in School and Replace a Targeted Car

Hey everyone,

My name is Wasila. I’m a full-time pre-med student working toward a future in healthcare. I’ve always done my best to push through whatever life throws at me, but right now, I’m struggling — and I need help.

I recently lost my job at Target, and I’m trying to stay enrolled in school while also figuring out how to replace my car, which has been broken into three times since I bought it in January 2024. It’s a 2021 Kia Forte, and even though it’s a newer model with security features, it keeps getting targeted because of known issues with Kia vehicles.

I worked hard and saved over $3,000 to buy that car so I could stop relying on unreliable buses that were making me late or causing me to miss class. As a commuter student, it gave me independence, safety, and peace of mind — for a while. Since then, it’s only drained me emotionally and financially. On top of dealing with three break-ins, I've also had to deal with worn-out tires the dealership never disclosed, and even got stranded on the side of the road and missed my best friend’s probate — a performance I had made handmade signs of her face for, and everything.

I’ve paid for towing, rentals, repairs, gas, registration, and school out of pocket. My parents have helped with what they could, including my freshman year tuition at Xavier University of Louisiana, but they’re also putting my younger brother through college now.

I’ve done my best to stay strong and figure things out quietly, but the truth is that I’m exhausted. As a Black woman from an African household, I was raised to push through without asking for help. But after losing my job, falling behind on tuition, and depending on a car that keeps setting me back, I’m out of options. I’m asking for support so I can cover my remaining spring and summer tuition and replace my car with something reliable and safe. Any amount you’re able to give would truly make a difference. And even if you can’t donate, simply sharing my story helps more than you know.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and support me in getting through school and moving forward safely.
