Robbie is a 78-year-old disabled Black woman who raised two children of her own as a single parent on a fixed disability income. But she has also been a mother to many others. When her only sister died, she took in her sister's kids and raised them as her own. For several years, she did the same for her niece's three children. Robbie's numerous acts of refuge, safety, comfort, and care to family and friends spanned five decades—all in a rented home.
In 2024, through the generous contributions of people all across the U.S., Robbie was finally able to buy a home of her own that could accommodate her physical needs. This one-story home with a walk-in shower allowed Robbie to continue to live independently after having her toes amputated due to a history of blood clots in 2018 and a stroke in 2022.
Now, Robbie is crossing another threshold. She was admitted to the hospital in early August 2025 for surgery to address circulation problems in her left foot. She was released but quickly had to be re-admitted for three more emergency surgeries (for a total of four surgeries in less than a month). Each intervention failed to restore circulation to her foot.
After so many weeks of pain and no other medical options available, Robbie has made the choice to go home. There, she will receive hospice care. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will be with Robbie in her final days, surrounding her with love, peace, and comfort in the home where she has felt so much joy—the home that many people reading this helped make a reality.
During this final transition, let's once again encircle Robbie and her whole family with love in the form of financial resources to ease multiple cost burdens: out-of-pocket costs for the failed surgeries and long-term hospitalization; home hospice and other end-of-life expenses, including funeral costs; and help with property taxes so Robbie's home can remain in the family.
Throughout her life, Robbie has sacrificed her time and resources to help others. Let's all do the same to bless Robbie and her loving family as she goes home.
