Born and raised in Gorkha, a remote part of Nepal, photojournalist Purnima Shrestha came into mountaineering for the thrill of her adventure. In 2017, she stood atop Mount Manaslu. Next year, she made it to Everest summit without any formal climbing training or proper acclimatization.
Then, a year later in 2019, she reached the top of Ama Dablam.
In 2021, she successfully scaled Mount Annapurna and Mount Dhaulagiri becoming a member of the first Nepali female expedition team to reach the summit of these two mountains.
This has inspired her to tell more mountain stories, mainly fast melting glaciers considered as the water source for Asia and the rest of the world.
To make this possible Purnima, known for her all-successful ascents, is striving to use that position for the greater good in the spring of 2022. Her aim is now to climb three top Nepali mountains--Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8516m), and Makalu (8463m)— if possible, all at one attempt and tell the impacts of climate change in the Himalayas. For her photography is a tool of storytelling.
Her upcoming challenge is to bring the attention of the concerned authorities that we need to protect what is ours for the future of our generation.
This is the start—a long expedition of sport and social cause. It’s challenging too.
Being a girl from a poor economic background she has been struggling to arrange funds for making her dream project successful. This has posed an uncertainty to her dream of scaling three mountains in the spring of 2022. For her, climbing three mountains is also an opportunity to tell climate change stories from the roof of the world. More importantly, her success in upcoming spring will encourage Purnima to elevate her profile as a 14-peak summiteer in the future. Please extend your support! Make her dream project of climbing three mountains in a single spring window a success!!
