For transperancy, Momo's surgery quote is attached at the bottom of this page.
Momo is a 5 year old, highly active, clever and cheeky black labrador. Her favourite things to do are playing ‘keepings off’ with socks, play fetch - preferably with somebody else’s ball - and snuggle up on the couch. Currently, her pain is preventing her from doing this despite heavy pain medications, and she will need a total bilateral hip replacement to regain function.
Over the past year, Momo has been having trouble walking, running and jumping, including her basics - getting up on the bed for snuggles. After a few visits to the vet, and one emergency visit after she collapsed halfway onto the couch, we have been told that despite her young age, Momo’s hips are losing function very quickly and causing her significant pain. Her scans show severe dysplasia and arthritis in her right hip, and moderate dysplasia in her left, and have been told she needs major hip surgery to regain full function again.
Total Hip Replacement surgery is going to cost $10 500 per hip, to be performed one at a time, not including (at a guess) of about $2000 worth follow up physiotherapy, checkups and medications post each surgery. A quick maths estimate totals 24 000 for both operations plus recovery periods. If she gets lucky, she will be able to function with just one hip replacement, but we won't know until after she is fully healed and so we are hoping for the best, planning for the worst.
Here is the problem we are facing. I have pet insurance, which has legitimately been a godsend and paid for majority of the scans and tests she has had to have over the last few weeks, but sadly hip replacement surgery falls under exclusions and they will not be able to pay anything towards it.
I am acutely aware that there are other devastating and pressing matters in the world, and many worthy causes to donate to, but I hope you will consider helping us. Momo and I would be forever grateful for your help, whether it's by donating spare change or by sharing this link around.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy the photos of Momo in peak goofy and athletic prime, and some of her friends.
