Mitch's Journey: A Fight for His Future

Mitch was just 15 when his world turned upside down. What started as the usual signs of a growing teen—excessive thirst, constant hunger, and feeling more tired than usual—soon turned into something much more serious. After weeks of visits to the doctor and a barrage of tests, Mitch was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

At first, the news was overwhelming, but Mitch’s family did their best to help him adjust. His parents, his younger sisters, and his extended family rallied around him, offering love, support, and comfort as he navigated this new reality. Mitch learned how to measure his blood sugar, count carbs, and give himself insulin injections. It felt like a lot for a teenager, but Mitch did his best to keep up with everything—juggling school, work, and the challenges of being a typical teen.

However, as the years went on, managing his diabetes grew harder. Mitch’s blood sugar levels were never quite stable. He spent more time in and out of the hospital, dealing with complications like high blood sugar, ketoacidosis, and recurring infections. Mitch was hospitalized multiple times over the years—each stay more difficult and frightening than the last. Despite his struggles, his family stood by him every step of the way. His parents took turns staying with him at the hospital, his sisters would visit with cards and small gestures to cheer him up, and the love they shared made each day a little easier to bear.

As Mitch grew older and became a father himself, he found even greater strength in his role as a loving parent. His children became his inspiration, fueling his determination to manage his diabetes and seek the best possible treatment. Mitch was always present for them, showing them love, patience, and devotion, even on the toughest days. His children are his world, and the thought of being there for them as they grow keeps him pushing forward in his battle.

Mitch’s doctors knew the toll the disease was taking on his young body, and after years of managing the daily challenges of diabetes, they recommended a pancreas transplant as his best chance for a healthier future. Mitch was fortunate enough to be added to the transplant list, and even more fortunate to be placed number 1 on the short list for a donor organ. This gives him a real chance at a life free from the constant strain of diabetes.

The costs associated with a pancreas transplant are astronomical. Between the surgery, hospitalization, postoperative care, medications, and follow-up treatments, the expenses are overwhelming. Despite having insurance, Mitch’s family faces a significant financial burden. Yet, despite these challenges, they remain unwavering in their support for Mitch.
