Help Me Compete And Raise Money For Charity

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thank you for taking the time to land on this page.

My name is Richard, and I am a full-time student, intern and CrossFit Athlete from Cape Town, South Africa. I currently live in Boston, USA, where I have the privilege of completing my MBA at Northeastern University. My fiancé and I have a french bulldog named Casper. I have a passion for photography and empowering people through photos.

In 2012 I came across the CrossFit Games. I had no idea what it was, but I knew it was something I wanted to do. 3 years later (2015), I joined a CrossFit gym (Cape CrossFit) with the sole purpose of trying to compete at the CrossFit Games. Fast forward 5 years (2018), and I had the opportunity to compete at the CrossFit Games for Cape CrossFit in the team division. Since then, my CrossFit Games dreams have taken a back seat as I have focused on enriching other areas of my life.

Recently I qualified for the CrossFit Games Semi-Finals in Cape Town, South Africa. I managed to qualify in 2021 as well; however, given COVID and the state of the world, I could not travel home to compete.

This rare and hard-worked opportunity has me standing amongst the 30 fittest African athletes. I'm lucky enough to say that it's not always easy training and competing on a full schedule. I train in the early mornings, during lunch breaks and late evenings. I do not own a weekend, social life or remember when last I ate a pizza (I love pizza.) My goal is to compete and win this stage of the Crossfit Games and ultimately progress to the final stage of the competition in Madison, Wisconsin. I believe my passion, sacrifice, and hard work have placed me in a position where this is realistic.

When: May 27th - 29th, 2022
Where: Stellenbosch, Cape Town

The Process:
The CrossFit Games Open:
Each year the CrossFit Games releases a series of workouts for all willing participants. It costs $20 to enter and is entirely online. The first stage takes place over three weeks in the month of March. The Games released three workouts each week for all individuals to complete this year. You complete and submit one workout each week. The Games have broken the world into defined regions of competition. These regions are each continent. An athlete will fall under the continent they were born in. I was born in South Africa and compete in the African region. The top 10% of athletes from each region move forward to the CrossFit Games Quarter Finals. I placed 17th/4195 applicants.

The CrossFit Quarterfinals:
The top 10% now complete 5 workouts over 4 days. Like The Open, the Quarterfinals are also online. The CrossFit Games release the 5 workouts on Thursday 12pm PST giving the athletes until Sunday 12pm PST to complete and submit their scores. The top 30 qualifying African athletes then move to the CrossFit Games Semi-Finals. I ended the Quarterfinals placing 4th in Africa and 199th in the world.

The CrossFit Games Semi Finals:
This brings us to the CrossFit Games Semi-Finals. Each region has a different allotment of athletes. North America, for example, has 120 athletes. The Semi-Finals is an in-person event designed to get the fittest male and female athletes to the CrossFit Games. As I compete under the African region, I will be competing at Fittest In Cape Town in Stellenbosch, South Africa. As Africa is a small region, only one athlete, the winner, will qualify for the CrossFit Games.

The CrossFit Games:
Finally, the top athletes from each semi-final compete at the CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. The Games is compromised of the top 40 male and female athletes worldwide. The Purpose: Find the Fittest Male and Female Athletes. I believe I can stand amongst these top 40 athletes.

We estimate the cost to be around $3500-$4000. This estimated cost includes travel, accommodation, food and entry into the event. I understand this is a selfish endeavor, and there are many other causes to which you could give your money. By the grace of others I've had the opportunity to pursue many dreams and I'd for this endeavor to help others do the same. Therefore I will be donating 50% of anything above $2000 to a South African-based charity named ProjectFit Soweto. Further, I will donate a portion of any prize money won to charity. Although my goal is to win the event, I believe a gift or a talent is wasted if we cannot use it to help others. Sports and CrossFit have changed my life, and I would like them to continue to be vectors for change. ProjectFit Soweto are a non profit based in Soweto, Johannesburg. Soweto is a township created in the 1930's by the then Apartheid Government to segregate races. The horrendous Apartheid regime created unjust disparity beyond belief for millions of people. ProjectFit Soweto looks to empower the youth of Soweto through exercise, healthy living, food and education. You can find out more information about ProjectFit Soweto here: https://www.projectfit.co.za

If you, your family, a friend or organization/company can donate, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Rich
