On Wednesday, July 23rd, our daughter Lizzie Maki was in an accident on Highway 430 in Franklinton, Louisiana. She was driving a Chevy Spark, and it rolled 5 times. Here is what we know so far: Her left arm is broken and will require surgery in a few weeks. Her L4 is severely damaged and will require surgery, but she was moving all of her extremities. However, the spine will not support her weight, so that will be a major surgery later. They have done a second CT and found a little bit of blood in her brain, but not enough to move the brain. They put a drain in to drain and monitor pressure as she is sedated, and they can’t do the tests to check for pressure while she is sedated. There was blood in her belly, but they opened her up, and no organs were damaged enough to require fixing. We will know more about brain function once they take her off of sedation. Lizzie is in a room in the ICU at Lakeview in Covington. She is sedated after the surgery. They found some blood in her belly, but no major damages to any organs that required fixing. They put the drain in her head and did another CT after the surgery to double-check the placement, and the bleeding was not any worse than before. It also was not bad enough to cause the brain to move from pressure. Everything is where it should be. She will be sedated for a few days, and the hope is to slowly take her off sedation so they can check her brain function. We have insurance, but the cost of this will be more than what we can afford. Her nurse said today that, in her opinion, all the injuries are something that is recoverable, but she will be in the hospital for a while. I will more than likely be taking a sabbatical from Washington Parish School System, which will reduce my pay. I appreciate anything you feel led to give.
