Help Leonardo Run Again – With the Right Wheelchair.
Hi, my name is Márcio Andreola, and I’m supporting a cause that’s very close to my heart, helping my neighbour and friend Leonardo and his incredible wife Adriana Almeida.
Leonardo’s life changed forever last year when he suffered a severe stroke. It left him with aphasia (a language disorder) and paralyzed his right side. Before the stroke, he was an active and vibrant man who loved walking his dog, tending to his garden, and spending time outdoors.
Despite everything, Leonardo’s spirit remains unshaken.
How it all started
I met Leo after his stroke. Even with all the challenges he faces, I could see the strength and light in him. I felt a calling to help, and that’s when I invited him to join me in a local charity race, even though we didn’t have the proper wheelchair.
On August 8th, 2024, Leo and I participated in the Special Olympics Annual Race for Detective Constable Robert Plunkett. I pushed him in a standard wheelchair. People cheered us on and shared how inspiring it was to see him out there. His smile said everything — he was proud, happy, and free.
As we crossed the finish line, the chair, not made for running, got stuck. We both fell. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but it became clear:
To keep running and inspiring safely, Leo needs a proper racing wheelchair.
Where your donation will go
- A racing wheelchair costs around $4,500 with taxes
- The rest will help us purchase essential running gear and sportswear.
- Assist Leo and his wife in paying the first and last month’s rent for a main-floor apartment, as they currently live in a place with stairs and no accessible entry.
We’ve set a goal of $15,000 so we can provide not just the chair, but also the dignity, safety, and structure Leo needs to continue healing and inspiring others.
The goal covers it all: health, sports, inclusion and hope.
