On a snowy Sunday evening, Nathan spotted a small dog running down the road. She was thin, freezing, and had no collar. He couldn’t leave her there, so he brought her home to get warm, fed, and safe. That’s how we met Jane Dog, now Juno— our little mystery guest whose real story we’ll never know.

Over the first few days, she mostly slept, ate, and started to come back to life. Once she relaxed, her sweet personality started to shine. She’s gentle, smart, and follows us everywhere like she’s trying to help out. We took her to the vet to check for a microchip and get her examined. That’s when we got the bad news: she tested positive for heartworm.

The Road to Recovery

Heartworm is serious and painful to treat. It also costs a lot — about $6,000-7,000. Still, she deserves a real chance at a healthy, happy life.

Juno is close to finishing the first 30 days of medication to prepare her body. Next, she’ll get three injections to kill the parasites. Each one means a round of monitoring at the vet to watch for dangerous reactions. Once that’s done, she’ll have two months of crate rest to safely recover.

She’s been nothing but patient and affectionate through every step. Our senior dog, Nero, who went through heartworm treatment a few years ago and made a full recovery, has been a calming presence for her. It’s incredible how animals support each other when they feel safe.
