Hugh is father to my 3 children, we have known each other for over 30 years. I am also a physiotherapist so my understanding of his disability and the advantages that the surgery offer is extensive.
We have been residents of the Gympie region for over 25 years, my physio practice is at Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach on the beautiful Cooloola Coast.
The $35 000 is the gap payment for the surgery, ie costs over and above medicare and private health fund contrbutions. All of the money raised is going to the surgical team who will perform the operation.
This is Hugh, he lost his right leg in an accident 33 years ago. He was riding his motorbike on an open stretch of country road when an oncoming car crossed the center line and collided with him. He was lucky to survive with multiple fractures, spending 18 months in hospital being put back together. Hughs ability to walk after the accident with standard prosthetic legs has been difficult because he lost his "good" leg in the accident his remaining left leg is weak from the polio he had as a child. Currently he is on crutches more than walking due to the pain.
The recent advances in surgery provide an oportunity to have a new type of prosthetic leg that attaches directly to the bone, allowing him to walk for the whole day without pain.
Dr Munjed Al Muderis in Sydney is the surgeon pioneering this revolutionary surgery in Australia. More information can be found on the website osseointegrationaustralia.com.au.
Hugh is a father of 9 and to date a grandad of 9. He is a very central figure in his extended family and depended upon for everything from fixing the car to babysitting and definitely in charge of cooking the roast for the large family gatherings. The new leg will mean that Grandad can do all the things that grandads do. It will keep him out of a wheelchair. He has been to see the team in Sydney and they have accepted him as a suitable patient to receive the surgery.
Hugh likes to be involved, to give his time, knowledge and a helping hand when he can. When the kids were younger and he was more able he was president of the soccer club for 4 years. His background is in mechanics and he is kept busy with his 9 children and their cars. He’ll never drive past someone on the side of the road without stopping to help. He is known to befriend travelers – he loves a chat – sometimes inviting them home to the family. Due to a family members breast cancer battle 7 years ago, each Mother’s Day he can be found at the local Mother’s Day Classic, cooking sausages or whatever jobs he can do.
Whenever a friend or a family member needs help he will drop everything to be there, now it is time for him to ask for help raising the money for his surgery so he can continue to live his life in a meaningful generous and productive way.
