This is a fundraiser I never dreamed of creating. My name is Ashley, daughter of Rafael Cabrera and step-daughter of Julia Mendoza-Cabrera. My dad recently retired from Newark Police Department and moved to Florida with his wife and two younger children. Less than a year later, we found out this devastating news. Two years ago, we found out Julia has Stage 4 Terminal Colon Cancer, which has now reached her liver. She has been through intensive chemotherapy and surgeries since. After a year of battling this catastrophic journey, we were just reaching relief in her remission phase and not even a month later we found out the cancer was back with a vengeance.
Since then, Julia immediately resorted to try other methods and flew to Ecuador for 2 weeks in search of Holistic Medicine and Homeopathic doctor. She was given advice and medication to start a holistic healing process to see if this will make a difference. All while, my dad has been home with the kids in search for a cure but this has left them with some unfortunate debt, that insurance will never cover. Unfortunately, she is now enduring a suffering pain that has become unbearable. Recently, Julia has been hospitalized for about 2 weeks now while they try to find a way to alleviate this pain with more surgeries and away from her husband and kids. We have been trying to get her back on chemotherapy, and holistic medicine to help fight this relentless disease and bring her back home.
My dad has now transitioned from retired working husband to permanent caregiver for his wife and kids by himself in Florida. We have taken turns to visit and help as much we can. And as much as it even pains us to even ask for help, we are asking and praying for an army of prayers and support Her fight is our fight!
I thought the worst thing my dad and Julia had to endure was the loss of their son RJ. Now we are praying hard (Husband, children, and bonus child, myself) not to lose her.
We appreciate any help to support Julia’s fight against this terminal Cancer.

As we now know the above original fundraiser was to help in Julia’s recovery and bring hope to Julia’s Cancer Journey.
On August 12, at 12:00 AM, our world was forever changed. Our beloved Julia passed away in hospice, leaving behind two young children and our father, who is now their sole provider. She was a devoted mother, wife, daughter, aunt, sister, cousin and friend, and her loss has left a deep void in our hearts.
In her final wishes, Julia expressed the desire for her remains to be turned into jewelry for her children, so they can always carry a piece of her with them. This is a beautiful way to honor her memory and keep her close to their hearts as they navigate life without her.
We are reaching out to our community for support during this incredibly difficult time. Our father is now faced with the enormous task of providing for and raising these two young children on his own. Any contribution, no matter how small, will go towards fulfilling Julia’s final wishes and helping our dad manage the financial burdens ahead.
Your kindness and generosity will help us honor Julia’s memory and provide some much-needed relief to our family as we begin to heal from this devastating loss.
