Help "Hawaiian Mike" on his medical journey

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Susan, and I am fund raising for my son-in law Micheal Alayon. On Tuesday June 7th Mike went to the emergency room with an extremely swollen and painful leg.  Upon arrival they pulled blood and did an ultrasound to rule out blood clots.  He was diagnosed with sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis and kidney failure.  They immediately started him on antibiotics and worked on getting him admitted to the hospital.

-Wednesday 6/8 his leg had gotten worse, and the infection was threatening his life and limb.  They immediately took him into surgery where they planned to remove as much of the compromised tissue as they could.  During surgery his blood pressure bottomed out, they stabilized him, gave him extra fluids and finished removing what they could at that time.  They struggled to keep his blood pressure under control and after surgery was admitted to the ICU on a ventilator.

-Thursday 6/9 they started to decrease his blood pressure medication, and later that evening they were able to remove the ventilator.  However, once off the ventilator he spiked another fever and his bloodwork soared out of control due to the infection.  Because of his penicillin allergy he had to be put on several different antibiotics in an effort to fight the infection.

-Friday 6/10 in the evening they moved him up to Progressive Care from ICU and he went in for his 2nd surgery.  They removed more tissue and put in 2 wound vacs to help with swelling and to remove bacteria.  Mike has 3 large incisions, 1 anterior upper thigh to ankle, 1 lateral thigh to knee, and 1 lateral knee to ankle.

-Saturday 6/11 his bloodwork was still not improving so he had to receive a blood transfusion to prep him for his next surgery Sunday.

-Sunday 6/12 he had his 3rd surgery.  They had to take more tissue around the ankle and up the lateral low leg.  He received another blood transfusion due to blood loss and the surgeon was concerned about not being able to save his leg.

-Monday 6/13 was a bad day.  He was so sick and had blood in his vomit.  They tried to help with medications, but nothing was working.  They were concerned about a possible belly bleed and needed to do an Endoscopy.

-Tuesday 6/14 he had his Endoscopy, and he finally received some good news... No Bleed!!

-Wednesday 6/15 he went back in for his 4th surgery.  They didn’t have to take out anymore big areas of tissue this time, only small spots and they cleaned up the edges.  They changed out his wound vac’s and have put a watch on the tissue around his ankle and calf.

Mike has endured over 4 surgeries in 8 days, each day removing more tissue.  Deep wounds continue to cover both sides of his left leg, from upper thigh down to the ankle. He has multiple surgeries in his future and has to be put under for all wound vac changes at this time.  He has another month in the hospital and will face months of rehab, tissue grafts and have to relearn how to walk on an already damaged foot (due to a congenital disability associated with being a premature baby).

“Hawaiian Mike" is a family man, born in Hawaii, but lived most of his life in Oregon.  He has two active boys, Kainoa (12) and Brody (10) and has been with the love of his life, Kimberly, for almost 22 years.  He is involved in numerous community activities like Little League, SPRD, basketball, flag football and has participated in many local fundraisers.  He is a member of UFCW Local 555 Union working for Fred Meyer as part of the night crew to keep his days open for family activities.
Mikes wife, Kimberly, works full-time as a Massage Therapist but has had to take time away from work to tend to Mike thus making ends meet difficult.  She worries about the hospital and doctor bills coming in after spending over a month in the hospital, home care and visits for wound dressing changes and skin grafts.

Mike is one of the “good guys” always doing and giving to those around him.  Now he needs us to rally around him to help him and his family.  Any donations are greatly appreciated and will go toward Mike’s unpaid hospital and doctor bills.  This will help him and his family keep their home since living on a one person’s wage will not cover all their expenses. Thank you.
