Being homeless is an everyday struggle. My friend George and I were both born and raised in Santa Clara County, and it’s difficult to imagine leaving the place we’ve always called home. We do our best to maintain good hygiene, relying on the kindness of a friend and paying to use the gym for showers. Despite our efforts, our health is suffering—especially since we have to sleep sitting up most nights cramped in a cluttered truck. George’s leg has been leaking and needs medical attention, but it’s hard to get the supplies we need when every dollar counts.

I used to work in the construction industry in active marketing until the separation from my abusive ex, and George was a tow truck driver until a back injury left him unable to work. Now, we support each other, just as we have for the past 17 years. On top of everything, I have a lot of cavities that need root canals that are only getting worse with abscesses if I don’t take care of them now. We’re hoping to raise enough to get medical supplies for George, dental care for myself, secure temporary housing at the least a room every now and then especially while its raining, buy food, and get the truck to pass smog so we can get current updated tags. We constantly worry about the truck getting towed away since its been past the registration date (but tags have been paid, we got insurance, and reinstatement fee have been paid). This truck used to belong to George’s father so its very sentimental to him.

The basics would make a huge difference in our lives and help us stay safe and healthy while we work toward stability.

You may ask yourself, why don’t you guys just get jobs? Easier said than done. I’ve had interviews, but it’s surprising how many places won’t accept a P.O. Box as an address.
