Chris (Gene) Mattes and Diana Stellhorn

We want to introduce you our dear friends Diana and Chris (Gene). We met Diana in 2008. She was a neighbor first, and quickly became family, but we  still affectionately call her “Neighbor”, some fourteen years later. When she met Chris (Gene)  in 2015, she knew she had met her soulmate and they were married August 2017.

In November 2021, Chris (Gene) visited his Dr for a sore on his tongue but was referred to an ENT specialist. Shortly thereafter, he underwent 2 surgeries to remove part of his tongue and 46 lymph nodes and was diagnosed with Stage 3 tongue cancer. This was an obvious blow, but complicated by the fact he also has Lupus making him high risk for infection. Since his diagnosis, Chris (Gene) has been through nothing short of torture. On two separate occasions, he was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator, received a tracheostomy, and a deteriorating prognosis. But through his own determination and strong will he survived 30 radiation treatments, a total of 3 hospitalizations in - one which lasted for 3 weeks, AFib, and a double lung infection. Despite all of these serious complications and near fatal setbacks, Chris (Gene) was finally able to come home on June 4, after a two week physical rehabilitation stay. Needless to say the past 8 months has brought on a roller coaster of emotions, overwhelming stress and fear, often testing their strength, but never their resolve - giving up was not an option.

We are so thankful to report Chris (Gene) is home now with Neighbor and their fur babies! But they are enduring yet another major hurdle. They recently learned the main water shut off line to their home had been leaking very slowly for an undetermined amount of time and has caused major structural damage. Repairs will require a full restoration of walls, flooring, and mold remediation in the crawl space. But worst of all, their insurance has deemed this negligence and denied their claim because evidently they should have known this pipe was leaking??  The costs for these repairs are yet to be determined. But Neighbor has been unable to work for months, and while the medical bills are mostly covered by Medicare there is a lot they don’t cover, nor does it cover their other expenses (fuel, mortgages, utilities, food) that have only been compounded by major water damage to their home.

As a way to offer our support, we are requesting donations of any amount to help cover this exorbitant expense to repair and restore their home. Any amount of donation is a gift and will be deeply appreciated. If you can not give, please help us by sharing this story and encourage those you share it with to do the same. Thank you for your prayer, your help and support!
