On Saturday, March 28, my dog Daunte was hit by a truck. It was one of those moments that didn’t feel real. Everything happened fast, and before I knew it, he was being rushed to an emergency animal hospital here in Canada.
Miraculously, Daunte didn’t break any bones, but the damage was more complex. He had to fight through the night just to breathe without assisted oxygen. After consulting with the vets and Daunte’s closest family, we made the decision to amputate his front left leg so he could have a comfortable life moving forward. It wasn’t easy, but it was the right decision.
D-Money made it through surgery and is now on the road to recovery. He’s still a little rascal, just missing a leg. He’s always been such a loving dog, and that hasn’t changed.
While healthcare for humans might be free in Canada, it is not free for animals. Between the emergency care, a four-night hospital stay, and the surgery, the total cost has come to $6,500 USD.
I’ve had a lot of people reach out asking how they can help, which honestly means more than I can explain. So I decided to put this together for anyone who feels moved to contribute. There is absolutely no pressure, and sharing this helps just as much.
I’m just incredibly grateful that Daunte is still here.
A Note from Rachel:
Daunte is a long-legged pup full of love and anxiety. He may be down one leg, but he is still so full of love, life, and curiosity.
Whenever I felt overly anxious, D was always there to lie on my stomach and calm me down. He’s my favorite nap buddy, a giver of stinky kisses, and a lover of a flaky croissant. I’m certain he’s even helped prolong Brees’ life.
We may no longer get to cuddle every night, but I am bonded to Daunte for life. Every moment you get with a dog is precious, and I’m forever thankful that I still have moments to spend with him.
This year hasn’t started out easy for any of us, and if you’re able to give even a little to help make Daunte’s life easier, I would be incredibly grateful.
