Help Beverly Perez Rego travel to the US to attend her PhD studies at OU

Beverly Perez Rego is an award-winning Venezuelan poet and translator, and the author of six volumes of poetry. She currently lives in Caracas, Venezuela, a country suffering deep political and financial turmoil, where the average income barely surpasses $100 a month and inflation is over 1000%.

In 2020, Beverly was accepted and granted full funding at the Ph.D. in Spanish Literature Program of the University of Oklahoma, completing her first semester online in Fall 2020. However, OU has requested Beverly to comply with her academic and GTA duties in-person for the remainder of the PhD program, where her work will focus on researching poetry written by women in Venezuela and Latin America.

Consequently, beginning 2021, OU granted Beverly a Leave of Absence to resolve the issues regarding her relocation to the US and to raise the required funds, but due to the ongoing political and financial crisis in Venezuela, aggravated by the pandemic, Beverly has not been able to raise the funds she desperately needs.

Beverly must be in Norman, OK in January 2022. Otherwise, she will lose her spot in the program!

 

These serious circumstances have compelled family members, friends, colleagues, and readers of Beverly Perez Rego to come together in an effort to support Beverly in any way possible, encouraged by our appreciation for Beverly's talent, work and trajectory, and our desire to contribute to her cause.

To help Beverly, we have formed a team and created this GoFundMe, setting a goal of five thousand dollars (US $ 5,000) for the following:

Beverly must travel and process her visa in Bogota, Colombia, as there is no American Embassy in Venezuela. This will also imply costs for insurance, airport fees, Covid tests, as well as local transportation, maintenance and lodging, as she will have to stay between one to two weeks, or more, while waiting for the visa to be issued.

In January 2022, she will have to travel to attend her doctoral program in the United States, and cover her expenses for flights, lodging, insurance, medications, COVID related tests, other regulatory tests and medical examinations as per Venezuelan and US guidelines, incidental fees as required by local regulations imposed by authorities; land transportation in Norman, as well as initial lodging, meals and housing costs at OK, and university fees and other charges required of international graduate students.

Beverly needs URGENT help to attend OU and begin her in-person studying and teaching duties in Spring 2022. Beverly's family, friends, colleagues, and readers will greatly appreciate your solidarity. BIO

Beverly Pérez Rego is an award-winning Venezuelan poet and translator, and the author of six volumes of poetry. El hilo atroz, her most recent collection of poems, was published in Venezuela by Universidad de Carabobo in September 2021, and two new collections (Nueva antología, by Taller Blanco Ediciones, Colombia), and Widow, by Editorial Cabrial (Madrid-Venezuela) will be published in 2022. Her poetic work and translation collections (which include Louise Glück, Mark Strand and Najwan Darwish, among others) have introduced her readers to a unique, highly personal universe, enriched by her bilingualism and multiple cultural influences as a Latin American writer. Her poetry was included in the prestigious anthology Rasgos comunes: Antología de poesía venezolana del siglo XX, an anthology of Twentieth century Venezuelan poetry published by Pre-Textos (Madrid, 2019). She is known for Artes del vidrio, her translation column in the renowned literary supplement Papel Literario of Venezuela’s premier newspaper, El Nacional. She is member of the editorial committee /masthead and regular collaborator of Revista POESIA, a canonical Venezuelan literary journal spanning half a century. Beverly has earned recognition for her websites on experimental translations of established and recent Venezuelan poets (Atlantean Poets and A New Venezuelan Poetry), as well her translations of English language poetry in literary journals and supplements in Latin America, Spain, and the US, where her bilingual work and other poems in English have appeared in The Journal, Latin American Literature Today, Tammy Journal, and West Branch Magazine.

She has read her work at poetry festivals and events in Spain (Universidad de Salamanca, 2001) and Argentina (Festival Internacional de Rosario, 2003), among others. She was Writing Fellow and State Alumni at the International Writing Program in Iowa (2010) and Guest Poet at Pittsburg’s City of Asylum (2010-2011). In 2012, she participated in the Poetry Parnassus Festival in England, and the Rain of Poems Over London event.

Beverly is a graduate of Universidad Central de Venezuela’s School of Language and Literature, studied Latin American Literature at Universidad Simón Bolívar, and received master's degrees in Spanish (MA) and literary translation (MFA) from the University of Iowa. She currently resides in Caracas.

 

Her family, friends, and readers are currently raising funds for her to relocate to the US and begin in-person duties as a doctoral student in Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Oklahoma, where she was admitted in Fall 2020.

Beverly Pérez Rego es una reconocida poeta y traductora venezolana, ganadora de varios premios y menciones, y autora de seis volúmenes de poesía. Actualmente vive en Caracas, Venezuela, un país que sufre una profunda crisis política y financiera, donde el ingreso promedio apenas supera los $ 100 mensuales y la inflación supera el 1000%.

 

En 2020, Beverly fue admitida y recibió una beca en el PhD. del Programa de Literatura Española de la Universidad de Oklahoma (OU), completando su primer semestre en línea en el otoño de 2020. Sin embargo, OU requiere que Beverly cumpla con sus deberes académicos y de enseñanza en persona durante el resto del programa de doctorado, donde su trabajo se enfocará en la investigación de poesía escrita por mujeres en Venezuela y América Latina.

Beverly Pérez Rego, poeta y traductora venezolana de reconocida trayectoria, actualmente reside en Caracas. Su obra poética y traducciones (que incluyen a Louise Glück, Mark Strand, y Najwan Darwish, entre otros) han introducido a sus lectores en un universo medular y personalísimo, valiéndose de múltiples e inesperados referentes, como en El hilo atroz, su poemario más reciente editado por la Universidad de Carabobo en 2021.

Autora de seis libros de poesía y siete libros de traducción, su obra actualmente en prensa incluye los poemarios Nueva Antología (Taller Blanco Ediciones, Colombia) y Widow (Ediciones Cabrial, Madrid-Venezuela) a publicarse en 2022. Su obra fue incluida en Rasgos comunes: Antología de poesía venezolana del siglo XX, editada por Pre-Textos (Madrid, 2019).
Es colaboradora del Papel Literario del diario venezolano El Nacional, donde su columna Artes del vidrio presenta y traduce poetas de lengua inglesa. Es miembro del Comité Editorial de la Revista POESÍA, publicación canónica de la tradición literaria venezolana por más de medio siglo.

Ha sido reconocida como editora de portales dedicados a traducciones experimentales de poetas venezolanos consagrados y novísimos (Atlantean Poets y A New Venezuelan Poetry), y por sus traducciones en revistas y suplementos literarios en América Latina y EE.UU.
