In the blink of an eye, our world changed. Sammi suddenly became paralyzed in her hind legs and had to undergo emergency spinal surgery due to Intervertebral Disc Disease. She still has months of rehabilitation, follow-up appointments, medications, and specialized care ahead of her.

Sammi is so much more than just a dog to me. I got her in 2021 after losing my little brother, Sammy, to suicide. That was the darkest time in my life, and there were many days when I struggled to get out of bed or find joy in anything. Naming her after my brother was my way of keeping a piece of him with me, and from the moment she came into my life, she gave me a reason to keep going.

For the last four years, Sammi has been my comfort, my companion, and my light during some of the hardest days I have ever faced. She has been there through every tear, every heartbreak, and every difficult moment, always loving me unconditionally. She helped me heal in ways I cannot fully put into words. She is family. She means everything to me, our family, and everyone who loves her.

Thankfully, because we acted immediately and got her into emergency surgery so quickly, Sammi has about a 90% chance of regaining normal mobility over the next 3 to 5 months. That hope means everything to us. However, rehabilitation will be a major component of her recovery and success. She will need ongoing rehab, therapy, follow-up visits, and continued support to give her the best chance at walking, running, and living a full life again.

At the same time, I am also dealing with financial hardship due to the ongoing DHS shutdown impacting my work as a contractor, making this unexpected emergency even more difficult to manage.
