Hi, my name is David, but my friends and family call me Dai.
10 days ago, I was crushed by the engine of my van after colliding with a lorry. It took emergency services over two hours to cut me free before I was rushed to Addenbrookes Hospital with two fractured hips, five compound fractures in my legs, multiple broken ribs, and a lacerated spleen and liver. The police blue-lighted my family to the hospital as they feared I wouldn’t make it.
After over 30 hours of surgery, I’m somehow still here. It’s a miracle I survived.
I’ve worked as a driver for the British Heart Foundation for 18+ years. But with a long and difficult road to recovery ahead – including learning to walk again – I won’t be able to work for the foreseeable future. My family have set up a GoFundMe to help support me while I recover.
Before my accident I lived on a River Boat. I love the boat and the freedom on being on the River. The likelihood of my boat being equipped for me when I am discharged from hospital is very unlikely so my family are trying to sell it.
I am a driver by trade, and a writer by heart and soul. My goal is to use this time to share my writing with the world and find a new way forward, using my brain instead of my body.
Right now, I’m unable to share this story myself, so my niece is sharing it on my behalf – until I’m strong enough to do so.
Please support me by donating, sharing, and following my journey. Your support means more than you know.
