Hi :)
Hats for Harry (Mr Coffey)
I am a highschool teacher and lifeguard who was recently diagnosed with Melanoma. I do spend a lot of time out in the sun, because I love to surf and the beach, but I have always taken protecting my skin seriously and never imagined this would happen to me.
Whilst I protect myself very well and am always smothered in sunscreen and Zinc, this diagnosis scared the life out of me and I wanted something positive to come from it. I thought the perfect opportunity would be to raise some awareness and educate the community about the dangers of the sun, whilst also gathering some funds for the amazing work of the cancer council through my school.
The main motivation is to provide some extra education for students and their families to make sure everyone understands the importance of being sun smart and what this actually looks like and involves.
It is also a chance to discuss the importance of getting regular skin checks and making notes of changes to moles and other spots on your body.
This is particularly important timing, as summer is fast approaching and people forget that 2/3 Australians will have some sort of skin cancer in their lifetime.
But some extra funds for the cancer council and all the work they do would be fantastic and greatly appreciated as well.
Mr Coffey is going to shave his pinhead to expose his massive ears and students are going to all wear funny hats to school for a day as a way to promote awareness.
Remember everyone please wear sunscreen, chuck on a hat, protect yourself from the sun and get regular skin checks!
Enjoy the weather if it finally starts to improve, have fun with your loved ones and most importantly, stay safe and sunsmart over summer!
Cheers
Mr Coffey :)
