Help Keep H. Lee at Home Where He Belongs!

Veteran animation editor H. Lee Peterson, an ACE member since 1996, whose work on such classics as Aladdin, Little Mermaid, and Madagascar earned billions for the industry, has been suffering from Lewy Body Dementia and unable to work for the past 9 years. Given 3-5 years to live when diagnosed, his wife Alex dedicated herself to his care and despite some fluctuations in functionality, two episodes in hospice, one grand mal seizure and 3 months in a caretaking facility when the end did appear to be nigh, H. Lee is back to just symptomatic! No more diapers. No walker. No hand feeding! A medical miracle against all odds apparently. But an expensive one. Nine years with no income has seriously depleted his resources. The residential community they live in provides much need physical and mental stimulation but raises the rent every year - this year by 8 percent! H. Lee needs intravenous sedation for dental work that Delta Dental will not cover despite the medical necessity - $700 per visit. Co-pays, medications, nutrition and basic supplies have all increased. His wife is unable to work as despite his functionality improvements H Lee requires 24/7 care. Family caretakers do not get paid! Her goal is to keep him with her where he is thriving for as long as humanly possible. Putting him in care at the dementia unit at Harry’s Haven (Motion Picture & Television Retirement Home) would separate them as she is not allowed to live there with him nor even live on campus. There is no accurate projection for his life span. A year? Ten years? No-one knows! But we do know that H. Lee deserves the best quality of life for however long that may be and that staying where he is, cared for by his wife who meant “for better or for worse”, and continuing the successful actions that have leveled his symptoms out is what he needs. Those of you who knew H. Lee will remember a quiet and gentle man with a vivid imagination, good sense of humor and the ability to lead a crew and mentor the new to achieve acclaimed work. Although he can no longer use a phone or computer, often gets confused, sometimes can’t find the right word or even put on his pants and sees imaginary people and animals in the apartment, H. Lee can remember his projects and people he worked with. He loved editing and would still be in the cutting room but for this dreadful disease. Thank you for your help keeping him at home with his wife - where he belongs.
