Hingham High School needs your help funding a unique – even historic – opportunity for our school and community. This August, 42 of our students will travel to Japan for a ten-day cultural exchange in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima. The trip is a follow-up to the “Hingham-Tennoji Exchange” that captured headlines in March 2014 when HHS hosted a baseball team from Tennoji High School in Osaka.
When the Tennoji team appeared in the documentary film “Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball” (which aired nationwide on PBS several years ago), their legendary coach began dreaming of an exchange that would bring his team to the United States. The realization of that dream, exceeded our greatest hopes. The week-long exchange created terrific friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
When our guests invited us to visit them in Japan this summer, we knew we had to find a way to make that dream a reality. Now it’s our turn to step up to the plate!
It's more than Baseball, though. A few highlights of the student experience will be:
A guided day in Tokyo
Exploring Buddhist and Shinto temples
Visit at US Embassy
Riding the Bullet Train
Visiting Hiroshima Memorial Peace Museum
Kyoto teahouse and seminar on true Geisha profession
Visiting our host students in their town of Osaka
The cost per student is approximately $6,000.00. We are fundraising to bring the student fee to $3,000.00 and keep the trip affordable/attainable for all of those students who hosted our friends from Osaka last year.
The United States-Japan Foundation, an organization that works to “deepen understanding and friendship” between the U.S. and Japan, agreed to support the trip with a grant which will cover the cost of the flight. But we will need additional support from allies in our own community. Every single dollar will help.
Please consider a tax deductible donation sponsoring this endeavor! With deep gratitude for your consideration,
