Hi I am raising funds to help an elderly couple facing the worse time of their life.
John and Janet Strawbridge are a quiet, dignified couple in their 80s who never imagined they would be facing eviction at this stage of their lives. It’s not a holiday. It’s not a lifestyle choice. It is the only safe, stable place they have.
And it’s being taken away.
After nearly three years of quietly living in their own caravan at McLaren Vale Cabin and Caravan Park. They paid their rent, followed the rules, and maintained their site with care.
John and Janet are now facing eviction — with just less than 47 days to leave and no safe place to go.
This is happening in the middle of a housing crisis.
This is happening despite John’s fragile health.
This is happening to people who have done nothing wrong.
John and Janet didn’t just rent a site. They built a life there, they made it their home.
They used their limited pension savings to carefully maintain their site, like many other residents in the park they placed a small patio on their annex, installed an air conditioner through Government funding program and a small tool shed, not for luxury but to help create a safe, stable environment essential for their health and wellbeing.
Then came the notices.
Then came the pressure.
Then came the eviction.
Now, despite their age, medical fragility, and the current housing crisis, they are being forced to leave.
Why this is so serious - Stability is not optional — it is essential.
• For John, stress is dangerous. Doctors have made that clear. John suffers from severe medical conditions that require stability, access to care, and a stress-free environment.
• For Janet, the fear is constant. Janet is his primary support. The emotional and physical toll of eviction is devastating. while quietly asking the same question over and over: “Where are we supposed to go?” There is no answer.
• For both of them, this eviction is terrifying and they are now being forced to watch the clock countdown on the home that keeps them safe.
The system has failed them
• After many hearings and months The South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT) acknowledged that the park owner acted unfairly, retaliatory, and recognised the seriousness of John’s medical condition, and that their lease should be reinstated.
• And yet incredibly the outcome John and Janet were given was just 47 days to vacate (27 February 2026) — an impossible task for elderly residents with complex health needs and no alternative housing options.
What eviction really means for John and Janet
This is not just “moving on.”
Let’s be honest about what this really means. It means:
• Packing up a lifetime at an age when bodies fail
• Facing homelessness in their 80s at a time when security matters most.
• Living every day in fear while politicians and systems look away
• Risk to John’s health and wellbeing
• Loss of the only stable home they have
• Loss of their community and support network
• Loss of security
No one in their 80s should be packing up their life under this kind of pressure. No one.
This is bigger than one couple
John and Janet’s story is not isolated, its not just their story – it’s a warning.
Across South Australia, elderly residents are being pushed out from caravan parks and affordable housing with nowhere to go.
John and Janet’s situation highlight a growing crisis where age, illness, and fairness are being overlooked.
Their story has been shared with media outlets, and we have contacted government ministers, yet responsibility continues to be passed around while the clock runs down on two vulnerable pensioners.
If this can happen to John and Janet, it can happen to anyone.
We are running out of time
There is no housing waiting.
There is no emergency solution.
There is no backup plan.
Without help, John and Janet may have nowhere to go.
Why we urgently need your help — now
Funds raised will help cover:
• Emergency relocation costs. Moving and securing their caravan
• Temporary accommodation if nothing else can be found
• Transport and Storage for their van and belongings
• Medical and basic living costs during this forced upheaval
• Legal and advocacy costs to keep fighting this injustice
This fundraiser is about time.
Time to breathe.
Time to find safety.
Time to stop this from ending in disaster.
Every donation helps ease the enormous pressure they are under right now.
If this makes you angry — good
It should.
Because this is happening in Australia.
Because it’s happening to people in their 80s.
Because it will keep happening unless people speak up.
How you can help
• Donate if you are able
• Speak up — because this should not be happening in our community
John and Janet have always done the right thing.
Now they need help — urgently.
Your kindness could be the difference between safety and homelessness for two vulnerable people who deserve so much better.
John and Janet deserve safety, dignity, and compassion — not a countdown to homelessness.
Thank you for standing with them when it matters most.
