Let’s Help Whitey
Hi! My name is Lise Herring and while doing volunteer work in Tanzania I met a brilliant and courageous young woman named Whitey. Whitey is 27 and looking for a future, a future that right now just seems a distant dream. That’s why I need your help to raise money for Whiteys education and give her the future she deserves.
The Story
To explain a little about myself, I’m a 53 year old Norwegian woman living in Oman with my family. I spend a lot of my time doing volunteer work and on my last trip to Tanzania in January 2019 I worked closely with the Dare Woman Foundation. Through them I met Whitey.
Whitey is 27 years old and so far, life has not been easy for her. To give a very short version, due to poverty and loss of a parent she has had her schooling broken and a difficult time creating a future for herself.
Currently the Dare Women Foundation have taken Whitey under their wing, she helps at the foundation and trains a girl rugby team at a local school. She is sleeping on the office floor and has 6 USD a week for food. This has been her life for the past 5 years and it is hard to see a way forward.
Whitey worked alongside me and my group for long hours during our visit and she is one of the most smiling and courageous girls I have met in a long time.
Since returning to Oman I have kept in contact with Whitey and have learned more about her situation and her dreams for the future.
Whitey really touched my heart and I have decided to try and help her to move forward in pursuit of a future.
Whitey
It is Whiteys dream to work as a tour guide for those wanting to experience Tanzania and climb Kilimanjaro. With some financial support this dream is most definitely within her grasp.
Whitey has actually climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro twice using borrowed equipment since we spent time with her in January. As she told me “I better start training and getting the experience if I am ever lucky enough to be able to go to college”.
Together with Whitey and the leader of Dare foundation, we have set up a budget for what she will need. We have had confirmed that she will get a place at the Professional Tour Guide School in Arusha Tanzaniaif we can raise the money. There she will attend for a 1-year study for a certificate.
The Budget
School Fees (incl. boarding/ food): 4850 USD
Food at the school is expensive. This is including 50% of the meals.
Dare Foundation will try and help with the rest.
We have found boarding the best option to save on transport.
Driving license: 300 USD
Stationery/Books: 300 USD
Laptop (used): 300 USD
Field trips: 250 USD
Equipment (binoculars, clothes etc.) 500 USD
Total : 6500 USD
So Let’s Help
We have the opportunity to make an incredible difference to this young woman’s life. Let’s give Whitey the tools she needs to make a future for herself. So please, let’s help her together. Me and Whitey would be forever grateful. Thank you so much.
