HASA Academic Conference Fundraiser

The Hamline African Student Association (HASA) is a student-led organization at Hamline University with 8 executive board members. This year, HASA is attending a week-long conference in Marrakesh, Morocco during J-Term break. HASA is motivated to attend this international conference to help generate a new agenda of Global North and South collaboration targeted at school improvement, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. We believe this work to be crucial to bridging the gaps in quality education and achievements that exist in higher education.

The conference will be hosted by the Moroccan Center for Civic Education in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Training, and Scientific Research, and the Regional Council of Marrakech-Safi Region. This will be the first time the conference is being held in Africa which is pivotal because it occurs at a juncture when Africa and other developing nations seek genuine collaboration to achieve sustainable quality school improvement from all parts of the world.

The role of leadership in schools serving marginalized communities has been one of the most relevant topics in school improvement research during the last decades, but the discourse is dominated by focusing on local context conditions. We know very little about how school leadership in marginalized communities is influenced by aspects of the institutional context of schooling in different countries. We, as a result, want to bring back knowledge from different countries by being abroad and learning from professionals in this field. The goal is to have a comparative look at conditions, functions, and forms of successful leadership in schools serving marginalized communities in diverging institutional settings. We want to explore how we can support the growing population of students of marginalized identities as well as what faculty, staff, and the institution can do to serve students that hold these identities.

We are determined to attend this conference to explore and share educational solutions that can improve young people’s academic and life chances.  We want to equip young students with the confidence, tools, and dispositions to succeed in higher education. We hope to provide the space for exchange, learning, and collaboration between all people on campus whether that be marginalized students, professors, or administration to create enduring personal and institutional partnerships targeted at continuous and solidarity educational improvement for all.

In addition to attending the conference, we are looking to also volunteer with local organizations that target to address the variety of issues discussed above. And this aims to create a comprehensive experience while abroad to answer our main question of, how can we think about collaboration across stakeholders, scholars, and practitioners as a driver for educational change? The organization we are working with is called Project 91. Their aim is to help families support their children through education and into employment, encourage and sponsor apprenticeships and other vocational schemes for young men and women, provide micro-loans to people in need, protect and enhance the local environment and encourage responsible tourism. We find this organization to meet our core values as a team and hope to create a lasting impact through collaboration.

We ask today for your generosity and kindness in helping achieve this goal! HASA is looking to raise about $3,000 in order to help cover some travel expenses. All donations whether small or big are greatly appreciated!

We thank you in advance for your generosity!
