Help Greg Get the Medical Bed He Desperately Needs

In the summer of 2024, I, Jennifer Dawkins Spencer, met Greg and what began as a visit to bring him and his sweet mother Shirley weekly Communion quickly turned into one of the most meaningful friendships of my life. We’ve developed a bond rooted in faith, compassion, and love and every week, I go to share the Lord’s mercy and joy with Greg, only to find that he’s the one who gives me those gifts in return.

Greg is the most inspiring example of perseverance and faith in God I have ever encountered. Though he’s been a quadriplegic for almost 16 years and lives on life support, Greg’s spirit is strong, his heart is whole, and his prayers are constant — even for me. He cares deeply for those he loves; his honesty, loyalty, and unwavering strength of mind and spirit never fail to move me.

What touches me most is how Greg and Shirley carry this HEAVY cross with grace, courage, and deep love for the Lord. Greg shows me every week that life is worth fighting for, no matter how heavy the burden. He battles every single day with dignity and determination.

Greg’s mother and father were both his caregivers, up until Christmas of 2022, when Greg’s father, Jimmy, passed. Since then, his mother Shirley has carried that responsibility on her own. Greg shares stories about his dad often, and although I never had the honor of meeting him, he sounds like a funny, strong, and determined man — qualities that clearly live on in Greg.

Now, Greg needs our help. The bed he has spent every hour in for years has begun to malfunction. The bed is about 16+ years old, is no longer being made, and the parts to repair the bed are no longer available. We are raising funds for a newer version of the bed he has now, made by Hillrom. The newer model is called a Progressa + , this is an ICU bed to prevent pressure sores and includes pulmonary functions needed for Greg’s condition and will provide him with the comfort and safety his fragile condition demands.

This is not just about comfort — this bed is essential for Greg’s health and dignity. His incredible mother Shirley, continues to be his only caregiver, and they both deserve support and love from those around them
