Dylan is a Mississippi-born, service-disabled, United States Army Veteran who is looking to share his story. My name is Dave, Dylan’s friend, and I am writing this in the hopes that Dylan’s story inspires you as much as it inspires me.
In April of 2022 Dylan was diagnosed with an atrophying brain at 29 years old. For those, like me, who had never heard of this condition, it is when a portion of your brain actually begins to shrink by losing neural connections unexpectedly. Doctors said that he is anticipated to have all symptoms of dementia within the next 10 years and there is no known cure. Despite the hand Dylan was dealt though, he is the most genuinely positive person I know. Someone meeting Dylan for the first time would only see the most warm hearted, giving, and easy going man. Dylan refuses to let his diagnosis stop him from making connections with everyone around him.
I am seeking help so that Dylan may take a memory-making adventure of a lifetime and film his travels. I am hopeful that with additional resources, Dylan can maximize his trip and help him share his story with as many people as possible while he can. Funds will be used to help pay for travel costs, some camera equipment, and whatever resources Dylan may need to experience his journey and document it. I am proud to support Dylan on his journey and I know you will be too. Thank you.
Some words from Dylan:
“Hi There! My name is Dylan and I am an Army Veteran living in New Hampshire. In the Army, I was an Air Traffic Controller (15Q) in the 2-185th Aviation Regiment and served in Kuwait & Iraq in 2014-2015 . In December of 2017 I was medically discharged and began my work in the Civilian world helping homeless Veterans at a local non-profit.
In the Spring of 2021, I started noticing lapses in my memory and sought medical treatment as this somehow felt different than the PTSD and depression symptoms I struggled with after my discharge. For several months, my symptoms progressed to the point where I couldn’t remember certain tasks that I would perform weekly. These lapses in my memory were extremely disorienting as I would sometimes forget whole days at a time. In April of this year, my diagnosis was upgraded to degenerative brain disease manifesting itself as an atrophying brain. My doctors let me know that stimulating my brain may help me to slow the progression of this disease.
My plan is to go on a memory-making adventure of a lifetime. I recently sold my pickup truck to buy an electric SUV that I can camp in and drive around the country without having to worry about fluctuating high gas prices. I intend on embarking on a grand adventure where I focus on making new memories and finding new connections. I also plan to document my journey along the way primarily as a device to allow me to remember this journey at later stages in my sickness.
It is my hope that my journey may inspire and help someone else that is experiencing tough times. And remember, there’s no better day than today to make a connection.
