Reaching out is never easy for me. But I’m in a moment where things are tipping — and I need help.
I’ve spent the last three years fighting prostate cancer, its aftershocks, and the systems around them. I’ve been through radiation, remission, immune collapse, and this second bout now face joint surgeries that will affect my mobility for months.
The GoFundMe I started last year got me through the worst of it. But like many things, it slowed. Friends helped. Denton helped. But this town is stretched thin. One friend called it “compassion fatigue.”
I’m in a short-term housing situation that was always meant to be temporary — because I thought this was temporary. Based on how I recovered the first time, then cancer returned. I expected to bounce back faster. But the second round of illness has been deeper, longer, and with more complications.
I’ve applied for disability, for housing programs, and to three music-related support organizations. But waiting on those timelines has put me behind on my health insurance and car insurance. I’ve found a very cheap apartment from a friend — something stable and long-term — but I need help. Meanwhile, I’m just trying to hang on and not break completely.
I’m only now starting to have actual conversations with these organizations. Until then, I’m relying on this campaign to cover initial rent, reinstate insurance, afford co-pays, and deal with all the daily costs don’t come with invoices — toiletries, transportation, dog care.
I don’t have volunteer staff. I don’t have family or related resources. I make calls, argue with health insurance and write emails daily, alone. What helps me most isn’t just money — it’s momentum. If you’ve given before, thank you. If you can’t give now, I understand. But if you can share this — even to one person (or five in your circle, if you're up for the challenge) — it really does make a difference.
I’m still trying to live. Still trying to create. Still trying to come back.
With deepest gratitude,
—Christopher Flemmons
