50 at 50 is $5,000
My boys, Hudson and Brayden want to rescue dogs. They tell me they want the "biggest house in the world" so they can "save all the dogs in shelters".
I decided to help them out. To celebrate my 50th birthday in March, I need 100 people to donate $50 each for me to ride my road bike 50 miles in order to raise $5,000 for Halo Animal Rescue in Phoenix. Brayden and Hudson will each match 2% of your donations up to $200 combined.
Suggested donation: $50
Read Brayden and Hudson's words and learn more about HALO below.
ABOUT HALO ANIMAL RESCUE
HALO was founded in 1994 by a mother and daughter team. HALO provides temporary shelter to abandoned cats and dogs until they can be adopted into a permanent home. HALO is a limited admission or "no-kill" facility that does not accept animals from the public. HALO, believing that their strategy serves the animals in greatest need, selects animals from "open admission" shelters in Maricopa County, primarily Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.
BRAYDEN'S STORY
"I love animals and have always loved dogs. I would like if you could help to donate $50 or more to help them. I have a dog named Lilly andshe's 14 years old. She has a wonderful life and so should these dogs [in shelters]. Donate if you love dogs. I will match [your donation] 2%, up to $100.
HUDSON'S STORY
"My name is Hudson. I have a dog named Lilly, my dad and my brother. When my dad turns 50 he will ride 50 miles [on his bike] to donate money to a dog shelter [HALO Animal Rescue]. Just imagine what all those dogs are doing [in shelters]. They need a home. These are the reasons why you should donate to HALO Animal Rescue. I will match your donation 2%, up to $100."
CAN I RIDE 50 MILES?
I've been riding 10 to 20 miles fairly often for about two years. I tried to ride 56 miles this Summer and got to 46 before I bonked and called an Uber. It was over 100 degrees, just saying. See the Strava report below.
So, until March I'll train each week and post updates to GoFundMe. One way or another, I'm confident I'll make the 50 mile mark in a single day, in the first week of March.
I'll ride "The Loop " in Tucson, the same one I tried last Summer. Its main section is 56 miles of dedicated bike path around the city of Tucson, with virtually no interaction with traffic or traffic lights. And, it won't be over 100 degrees in March!
