Get Wyatt Benson to GW Law School

That's right! By the grace of God, and with help from family, friends and mentors, I am headed to law school this fall. If you've ever had a chance to get to know me, then you might know that my professional goal has always been to enroll into law school and ultimately, become a practicing attorney. My dream finally came true when I received my first acceptance letter from George Washington University Law School! When I received the letter I felt an uncontrollable rush of emotion. Almost immediately, I thought about how proud that I hope my parents and grandparents are of me. Many of my close acquantainces and friends might not know this, but neither my grandparents nor my parents graduated from high school. My grandparents were born and raised in South Carolina and due to the times, were unable to devote their time to education. My parents were unable to finish high school due to various life circumstances and they too shifted their focus towards helping my family financially, and later went on to receive their GEDs. I was so proud to be able to tell my grandparents and parents that I was closer to my goal and that if not for their sacrifices, I might not be in the position that I am in today. I messaged the rest of my family, friends and mentors also letting them know that I was accepted and that I was that much closer to turning my dreams into reality.

For a while, I enjoyed the emotional high of simply being accepted into law school. But soon, I refocused my attention beyond just being accepted, and started to create my plan to ensure that I will be enrolled at GW Law School this fall. I knew that for my particular financial situation I would have to take out loans to afford school. The total cost of books/supplies, personal items, room and board, transportation and finally, tuition and fees come to an astounding $85,900  per year. I applied for financial aid and scoured the internet for any and all law school scholarships available. Fortunately, GW has offered me $16,000 in financial aid per year, bringing my yearly total in loans to $69,900. In regards to the scholarships, thus far, I have been notified that I will be the recipient of the Nelson Mandela Scholarship from the National Black Law Student's Association in the form of a $500 scholarship. The remaining scholarships remain in the process of the being reviewed and if I am fortunate enough to be a recipient of any additional scholarships, I will be notified later in the summer and or shortly after the fall semester begins.

With all of that being said, I have created this campaign to reach out to my family, friends, mentors and anyone else to ask for ANY financial support that you might be able to provide me. If you have read the entirety of my story and are unable to donate, I COMPLETELY understand as we are all in various financial situations and many of us are still finding our own way in life. If you are able to donate, I would like to thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and in my dreams. The one promise that I can make to everyone, whether you donate or not, is that I will pay it forward. I will not only continue to give back to my community, but I hope to one day support other young men and women in such a way that they too can be closer to achieving their dreams.

Thank you,
Wyatt L. Benson Jr.
