O Siem! Si saq Siem! Hul q' min num! Huy c' qua!
My name is Lana Jack, and I NEED YOUR HELP to GET MY BUTT to WASHINGTON D.C.!!!
I have been invited to join the House of Tears Carvers and the Native Organizers Alliance on The Red Road to DC , a cross-country journey that will deliver a 24-foot Totem Pole from the coastal Salish Lummi Nation to Washington DC, stopping at nine Sacred Sites along the way.
I am asking for your help to get me on the Road to DC! I need money to repair my vehicle before I can even start the journey, and TIME IS RUNNING OUT!! I also need money for food, gas, lodging, and general travel expenses for this incredible opportunity to SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER. I need to get my wisdom in front of the decision makers of this country!
The Totem represents several CRITICAL ISSUES THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED BY THE BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION, including: Protecting Sacred Sites, Honoring Treaties, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirits, Truth and Reconciliation, and Protecting Water.
It is my calling to speak Truth to Power, and I am uniquely qualified to speak about each of these issues.
I am one of the last remaining survivors of my Mother's people, the Celilo Wy'am. We are a band of Columbia River Indians that refused to join the confederated reservations, and have therefore been denied our Federal rights to tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and the ability to practice our traditional way of life on our sacred lands and waters. We hold aboriginal title to Celilo Falls, a Sacred fishing site that was drowned and silenced by the Army Corps of Engineers when they dammed the Columbia River in 1957 -- a blatant violation of existing treaty negotiations. My people were separated, assimilated, and exterminated by boarding schools, institutions, and policies set by the United States government, and the slow genocide continues to this day.
My father's people, the Cowichan of Vancouver Island, B.C., suffered through the traumatic Truth and Reconciliation process imposed on them by the Canadian Government. This effort caused more harm than healing to the First Nations people of Canada. We must not repeat these same mistakes in America. It is absolutely critical that Indigenous Voices lead Truth and Reconciliation efforts in the United States.
My journey with The Red Road to DC begins July 10 on Vashon Island, WA, and we will arrive in our nation's capitol on July 29, where the totem will be displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. This is an historic opportunity to TAKE ACTION and MAKE REAL CHANGE, especially with Deb Haaland - the first Native American Cabinet secretary - leading the Department of the Interior, which oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs. THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!
