Community Care for Amanda
Many of us are feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world right now. In moments like this, it’s more important than ever that we show up for one another…
ESPECIALLY for those most at risk.
Our friend and comrade, Amanda,
is a disabled, autistic woman with severe daily chronic pain and illness.
BUT, as we all know, a woman who has spent years offering care, advocacy, and love to her chosen family and community. She has consistently shown up for others, and never asking for anything in return. Now, she truly and seriously needs our help, think in life or death terms.
In February of 2025, Amanda suffered a severe fall that caused significant spinal damage and left her with extremely limited mobility. As a result, she lost her job and her apartment while navigating complex medical systems, insurance delays, and the long wait for disability benefits, which is still being processed.
She is currently awaiting corrective spinal surgery that could allow her to regain some independence.
Facing eviction and unable to live alone safely, Amanda accepted temporary housing from someone she believed to be a friend, with the understanding that she would repay expenses once her benefits were approved. Over time, this living situation became increasingly unsafe for both her physical and mental health and stability.
Amanda is now experiencing a situation involving domestic violence, coercive control, death threats to both her cats and herself, and severe neglect.
She has been subjected to unsafe and hazardous living conditions, restricted access to food and basic necessities, financial coercion and control, withheld mail, unsanitary conditions impacting her health and her cats, and ongoing sexual harassment and intimidation. Her access to mobility aids, transportation, and medical care has been obstructed, placing her at serious risk.
Recently, Amanda suffered another significant fall while attempting to navigate hazardous walkways with her walker, resulting in an emergency room visit and further medical complications.
Efforts to obtain help through Adult Protective Services and local authorities have unfortunately not resulted in meaningful protection and have worsened her situation by placing her and her cats lives in more danger.
The good news is that with the support of her Primary care Doctor, her clinical psychologist, and a small group of friends,
Amanda has secured a safe place to live approximately 4–5 hours away. This relocation is critical for her safety and survival.
Amanda does not have family support due to being queer, disabled, and neurodiverse. She is also a survivor of childhood abuse, trafficking, domestic partner violence, and cancer…
BUT despite everything she has endured, she has continued to lead with unconditional compassion and kindness, rather than bitterness.
Right now, Amanda believes she has been forgotten and that no one will step in to help. We have the opportunity to prove that belief wrong, by showing our love for her, in our actions.
If you are able to donate, share this fundraiser, or offer any form of support, it would make a life-saving difference.
This is what true community looks like: showing up, protecting one another, and refusing to leave our Amanda behind.
