Our L'Arche Journey to Belfast

From Todd Rothrock, supporting Chad - It was so wonderful to share the delegate experience to the L’Arche International Federation Assembly in Belfast, Ireland with Chad Giesa from Spokane. We encountered many old friends and had the pleasure of meeting many new friends during our week-long stay in Belfast with 600 other L’Arche souls. Chad has a special way of reaching out and making people feel welcome in any surrounding.
From Bess Brownlee, supporting Kendyl - Our overseas adventure was brimming with the unfamiliar and the deeply familiar all at once. Often separated by language or culture, we continually found ourselves strangely and wonderfully at home with our new L'Arche friends from all over the globe. An abiding sense of belonging was present in all my days both in Paris and Belfast, and I was inspired by the passion and care by which our common vision connects us all.
From Cynthia Beebe, supporting Jazz - Attending the international assembly was a life changing experience for Jazz Sorenson. Traveling to Ireland was the first time Jazz had been overseas, and he loved every minute of his time with all his new L'Arche friends. He told me on the last day that he wasn't ready to go home. We were both truly blessed by our time in Ireland, and especially by the new friendships we made with many from L'Arche communities around the world.
BACKGROUND
The story of L'Arche is a story of belonging. When Jean Vanier welcomed two men with intellectual disabilities out of an institution to share life in his home in France more than 50 years ago, he could not have foreseen that L'Arche would grow to encompass more than 145 faith communities of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in 36 countries around the globe.
In L'Arche communities, core members (people with intellectual disabilities) are at the heart of everything we do. While those in the wider society may pity, ridicule or simply chose not to see them, in L'Arche communities core members are celebrated teachers of the lessons of the heart: vulnerability, compassion, suffering, celebration and joy.
There is no more meaningful celebration than a gathering of core members from multiple communities, and this year L'Arche gathers on a grand scale. Representatives from every community around the world will come together in Belfast, Ireland from June 20-27 for a week of connecting, teaching, learning and celebration. Donate now to help three L'Arche core members from the Western United States travel to Ireland to experience a week with our global L'Arche family. Each core member will be accompanied by an assistant, someone who knows them well and is prepared to support them each step of the way.
All donations are tax-deductible, and proceeds will be shared by the communities in the Western Region to pay for core member travel costs and registration fees. With travel and registration fees, the cost is approximately $2,500 per person.
Any additional donations over the cost of core member travel will be used to help communities cover travel expenses for assistants.
