Support the #climatehealthsummit

From the Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA)

Help us put health on the agenda at the UN climate talks in Nov 2017 – we need two interns to help run the Global Climate & Health Summit.

Fossil fuels and climate change have significant impacts on health.  The GCHA are a global alliance of health organisations who work on climate change, and #climatehealth movement building.  International climate negotiations need health sector perspectives, and need to incorporate health evidence in global decision-making.

When possible our alliance convenes Climate & Health Summits at the UNFCCC - COP meetings (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - Conference of the Parties).  Much of our work is done by volunteers, and for the 2017 Climate & Health Summit at COP23 in Bonn, we are seeking funds for two GCHA interns to support our event management, communications, website updates, and post-event follow-up.  Any funds raised over our target will support future GCHA interns.

Our Summits provide a unique opportunity for health professionals to collaborate with climate negotiators, health and environment ministers, environmental advocates, and climate and health researchers.

This year’s Summit will focus on what the health sector can do to help countries achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions to meeting the goals of the historic Paris Agreement.

Previous Summits:
·      GCHA partnered with WHO to convene the first Global Climate & Health Summit in 2011 at the UNFCCC’s in Durban (COP17).
·      In 2012 we developed the Doha Declaration on Climate, Health and Wellbeing, asserting that “health must be central to climate action.” (COP18)
·       Leading up to the 2015 meeting in Paris (COP21) we coordinated powerful health sector support for a strong climate agreement, submitting declarations representing ~13,000,000 health professionals from thousands of health organizations worldwide.  As a result, the “right to health” is part of the Paris Agreement.

This year the World Health Organization (WHO) are again co-hosting  and will provide venues and catering - but the GCHA relies on volunteers and interns to coordinate and host our events.  By funding this work you will contribute to health sector action on climate change, and help us to build the strength and momentum of the #climatehealth movement.
