Fuel Dolton's Journey to Independence #FuelDoltonsJourney

It’s a beautiful day outside, but Dolton can’t see it.

Despite being completely blind, he has never let this slow him down as he approaches young adulthood. The main challenge he faces is his inability to travel independently. This limits his ability to transition into a productive working adult. Unfortunately, in our state, mobility services for young blind individuals are inadequate. We’ve been repeatedly turned away because Dolton is not considered an independent traveler and is seen as a liability risk. Agencies meant to provide this support have continuously let him down.

Currently, Dolton is unable to navigate from his desk to find a restroom or the exit door in an emergency, let alone ride a bus to school or work. Recognizing that he won’t receive the necessary help here, we’ve developed a plan. Last year, we secured a vehicle to travel across the country to the Washington State School for the Blind, and we’ve spent the past year preparing it. We believe this school offers Dolton a strong chance for a productive, independent life.

We’ve started the enrollment process, and with the school year beginning on September 9th, we are on a tight deadline. We need assistance with fuel costs for the journey. As a single mother and artist, I plan to offer art lessons and sell my work along the way, but we need support to make this trip possible.
