This year, we’re also taking our Voluntary Pay Program online and in the hands of GoFundMe.
The Leader is a free newspaper that relies on the support of local advertisers to fund our business. Once a year, we ask our readers to consider contributing, no matter the amount. We suggest $26 or $52 (that equates out to 50 cents or $1 a week, as we are a weekly publication) but the amount is completely up to you. Some people send a dollar, others send hundreds, and every penny helps.
We use your contributions for two specific purposes: First we give a portion to the carriers who deliver the newspapers every week. Most of these wonderful people have numerous jobs and they don’t earn a lot of money. Being able to give them a check around the holidays means a lot to them – and to us. Second, we use your contributions to support the day-to-day operations of our business. And as technology advances, this business is more and more difficult to fund.
As it has been for so many of you, 2017 has been a challenging year at The Leader. When you couple the storms with the overall business climate and the move of advertising dollars away from traditional media and into the pockets of Google and Facebook, you can understand that funding local journalism gets more and more difficult by the day. Yet throughout the economic and marketing changes of the past year, we still believe The Leader has remained a valuable source of information to this community, and we are proud of the people who come to work every day to produce relevant news about you, our businesses and our neighbors.
Our model is simple: We tell stories about this community, we provide a history book of the things we accomplish, and we’re the first to tell you when something in our area can improve.
If that’s a form of journalism you appreciate, we hope you will consider supporting us this year.
As always, we at The Leader are so grateful for a community that has always supported its local source for community information. To those who can contribute, thank you.
