Winter 2021 Update

WE DID IT!

Friends of Glenside Weldon is pleased to announce that we not only hit our big goal, but raised over $80,000 and the new playground will be installed in late Spring 2021.  Thank you to all of the businesses, neighbors, donors, friends and committee members who made this project happen. Stay tuned for more updates, but below are some highlights from Winter 2021.

1. Will  The Cheese stay? The most asked question during our campaign! YES! Abington School District and FOGW are working on a preservation plan for the  concrete structure as we develop the new playground. It is a unique piece of Americana and we are happy to say The Cheese stays where it is and will be a place for new generations to make memories. Look for more information (coming soon!) on efforts around a preservation fund for The Cheese and the trees!

2. The Playground--ASD has secured a pro-bono playground architect on our behalf. The goal is to build an exciting playground that serves more ages and more abilities.  We look forward to sharing the design in late Feb.  ASD will take it from there after we approve the design.  Initial blacktop project proposal includes "One and half" smaller painted basketball courts.

3. More Trees!-  ASD  has approved our 3 year tree planting plan.  Abington Shade Tree Commission will take lead here. We are replacing the trees on Parkdale and planting new trees along Jenkintown Ave and at the playground.

Thank you to everyone who cheered us along as we made this dream happen.  Let's hope this project goes smoothly and we all will be playing on a BRAND NEW playground by June.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE FRIENDS OF GLENSIDE WELDON!

Fall 2020 Update

It’s been just over one year since we kicked off fundraising for the new playground at Glenside Weldon.  Friends of Glenside Weldon (FOGW) wants to update you on progress towards a new playground in the heart of our neighborhood.  Fundraising has gone very well.  We are happy to report that we have raised $62,000 and are only $13,000 away from our $75,000 goal.

Here are some highlights of what’s been happening since January:

- FOGW has confirmed Senator Art Haywood’s $25,000 grant.  This money will be used for new play equipment.

- FOGW has been hard at work conserving “The Cheese.” We have learned the structure was made by a very famous sculptor (Jim Miller-Melberg) in the 60’s and 70’s.  This Cheese is a piece of Americana and we are considering how to “Save the Cheese” and have approached ASD with the idea. We met with Abington Art Center Executive Director to understand how we best preserve it.

- FOGW solved the illegal parking issue and have full view of the playground again.

- FOGW and the Abington Shade Tree Commission in partnership with GYAC have submitted a greening plan for the entire space.  Over the last several months some of the giant trees along Parkdale have been lost and are missed. The proposed three-year greening plan replaces those trees and strategically plants new trees in key spaces.

Would you consider a donation today?  Every dollar counts towards a playground that represents our unique and dynamic community.
