Alejandro is an awesome student who has faced many adversities, and very much deserves to go to medical school. Unfortunately his family succumbed to the grip of poverty for some time and for a period of time was homeless and lived out of a car.
Avoiding many negative urban influences such as gangs and drugs he maintained focus & attained a bachelors degree from CSU Fresno achieving great grades and MCAT scores. He works alongside doctors and does an amazing job working as a scribe in the emergency department.
Not yet in medical school, he spends free time learning about medicine and procedures and is often told that his knowledge level of medicine, rivals that of a junior resident (someone who already graduated from medical school).
He always strives to go above and beyond what is expected of him, participates in various research projects, presented a poster at a national Emergency Medicine conference and serves as a mentor to his peers.
Unfortunately his recent attempt to go to medical school was thwarted by unforeseen circumstances & further financial hurdles. His grandmother who was the sole provider for a few of his cousins, died shortly after he started applying to medical school. The finances he would use for this costly application process was redirected to help take in his newly displaced young cousins. In addition to working in the Emergency department he picked up a part time job selling Menudo at a local swap meet to help his family.
We at the University of California San Francisco-Fresno, department of emergency medicine are raising money to help support Alejandro's journey to successfully matriculate into medical school for this upcoming cycle. We feel as his though his life experiences, dedication to life long learning and leadership skills will one day make him an ideal doctor who is passionate about helping others.
