Help Hedy Fight for Her Freedom

Hedy came to the United States seeking safety, hope, and the chance to rebuild her life.

Originally from Belarus, a country living under the shadow of authoritarian rule, Hedy made the difficult decision to leave everything behind in search of freedom and security. Like so many who come to America believing in its promise, she chose to follow the legal path.

She applied for asylum.

She complied with the process.

She showed up to every appointment and every hearing exactly as required.

She did everything the right way.

During her asylum hearing last week, something unimaginable happened.

Instead of continuing through the legal process she had been faithfully following, Hedy was suddenly detained by ICE and taken into custody.

She is now being held in ICE detention in a facility in California.

Hedy’s story is not one of someone trying to evade the system. It is the story of someone who trusted it.

In the time she has been in the United States, Hedy has worked hard to rebuild her life. After overcoming a serious illness, she found the strength to recover, begin working again, and start creating stability for herself. She has shown incredible resilience in the face of hardship and uncertainty.

Those who know her describe her as strong, determined, and deeply hopeful about building a future rooted in freedom and opportunity.

Now she faces one of the most difficult challenges of her life.

While detained, even basic necessities often require funds from commissary accounts. Simple things that most people take for granted — warm clothing, personal items, phone access to speak with loved ones — must often be purchased from inside the facility.

At the same time, immigration cases require legal representation, and the costs for experienced immigration attorneys can quickly become overwhelming.

This fundraiser exists to help support Hedy during this incredibly difficult moment.
