The Fort Morgan Humane Society is a small rural shelter. FMHS has made a huge difference in how animals are cared for in Fort Morgan. We have taken over the city animal shelter, spayed and neutered thousands of dogs and cats, transferred out many animals that we were unable to adopt, and have found forever homes for many, many orphaned animals. We include the community of Fort Morgan as we do this work. We have many dedicated volunteers and generous donations from businesses and individuals have helped us get to where we are. However, we are now in need of several high ticket items that we cannot currently afford.
First, being a small shelter is great in many aspects. We are able to be more focused on each animal, connect with our community, and fill in where we were desperately needed. However, there are also some drawbacks. As a small shelter we use all the space we have available, and we are running out of room. We need more storage space for our dog food, crates, and various other items. To get the additional space we plan to have the high school build a storage shed. The cost for the shed is $1100. (Achieved!!)
Next, we provide a blanket for all of the animals at the shelter. These blankets make them feel more comfortable and cared for. A blanket may not seem like much, but it is a small item that exponentially increases the comfort of the animals. Providing care for the animals is our first priority, and giving them each a blanket results in a lot of dirty laundry. We wash at least 8 loads of laundry every single day. We need to purchase a new industrial washer and dryer to help us meet this laundry demand. The combined cost for the washer and dryer is $1800.
Finally, our outdoor kennel area needs a lot of work. We would like to add 4 additional kennels outside. This will help all of our dogs get the outside time that they need. In order to expand we need $1500 for fencing.
