Our Challenge:
In the last sixteen months we have gone from being Grandparents thinking about retirement to becoming the custodial parents of our two grandchildren – and making application for Adoption of them. Our beautiful, strong and amazing daughter was taken from us in January last year due to extreme domestic violence. Her youngest child, our grandson, was diagnosed at birth with Cystic Fibrosis and there are and will be significant special needs for his care. In addition, we ourselves have had medical issues and surgeries that have significantly impacted our financial situation.
The Background:
It has been 16 months since the murder of our daughter, Kristen McShane. She was killed in Orlando, FL by her husband who then assumed her identity on Facebook to conceal his crime. She was a loving and dedicated mother, who worked very hard to provide for her children.
With us the kids are thriving despite this harsh and painful reality and with the help of regular counseling. The oldest, our 9 year old granddaughter, is so bright and just lights up our world. She is full of both profound and humorous observations about school and life in general. She loves books and also writing and keeping those around her entertained. Her enthusiasm for life and knowledge brightens our world. The youngest, our little four year old ‘fournado’ as his auntie calls him, is doing great too. He will be five soon and is growing and gaining weight and his lungs have been declared “pristine”. Cystic Fibrosis makes it very difficult to gain healthy weight and grow at a normal rate so the doctors are very happy with his progress. This condition requires several hours a day of respiratory treatments and nutritional supplements and enzymes to keep him healthy. His young life has been filled with many surgeries, including two in just the last year, and with CF more are expected. He is however, gloriously resilient and a funny little firecracker! Whenever someone calls him handsome or cute he says ‘No, I’m not! I’m hilarious!”
We adore having our grandchildren and watching them grow. They help us to see with faith and perseverance, and keep us laughing.
Kristen Sarah is now in Heaven and is likely welcoming kids who have lost their battle too soon with CF into an eternity of love. She was a warrior in the fight against CF. Now It is left to us to ensure Justice for her as we work toward a promising future for our grandchildren and as she watches over us from above.
Our financial situation has been complicated by our (and our grandson’s) medical situation and our needs are great. We are reaching out in faith to ask for any help from the community as we endeavor to provide our beautifully sweet and intelligent grandchildren with an enduring home abounding in great love. We are thankful for any help or sharing of this link.
Sincerely, Andrea and Steven Day
