Let's Help Barbara Sapanaro

My name is Kristin MacKay, and along with my husband Frank, and the family of Barbara Sapanaro, we are raising funds to support Barbara’s battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease). The family received the heartbreaking news of Barbara’s diagnosis in November 2020. Due to the progression of her illness and the cost of potentially life-improving treatments, we are making this appeal to raise funds to help her receive the best medical care available and to provide for related expenses.

Barbara and her husband John live in Manorville, NY and have two children, Johnny and Joey.  Their home has always been the heartbeat of the extended family and a place where everyone gathered to enjoy holidays and make wonderful memories.  Anyone who knows Barbara knows how much she loves to create special moments that bring joy to people’s lives. It’s something she regularly does for her family, at the Hobart Elementary School where she is a beloved music teacher, at her church, and among her many close friends.  She is also known to pitch in and help organize events and fundraisers for various causes that benefit the community, the William Floyd School District,  the Sharks football team at Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School, the Assembly of God Church in Center Moriches, and the East End Women’s Choir, just to name a few.
ALS is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control and difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.  Barbara began showing signs of illness just as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in New York during the spring of 2020, and her health declined quickly over the last few months as she sought a medical diagnosis.  To reverse the trajectory of the illness, she intends to try both traditional and experimental treatments not covered by insurance.
Please help us raise funds to cover these expenses.  This is an urgent appeal because the treatments are costly and unaffordable at this time!!

As some of you may know, the family has had some financial stress during the last couple of years. John, who is a member of IBEW Local 3, was injured on the job and is waiting for his disability application to be approved. Their son, John, attends Hartwick College and is in his senior year and Joey is a senior at Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School and will soon be heading to college.

Would you please consider a donation to help the Sapanaro family with Barbara’s medical care?

On behalf of her mother, Rosemarie, sister Nancy Slane, mother-in law, Gerry Sapanaro, and brothers, Frank and Gordon MacKay, thank you for reading this appeal, and for any contribution you can afford.  Help us pray for Barbara’s miracle and healing.  Help us show the Sapanaro family, and especially her children, John and Joey, that the community is there for them, just as Barbara has extended herself whenever anyone was in need.

Sincerely,

Kristin MacKay
