Name: Shalini Puri
A small mountainside scenic town named Shimla, located in the foothills of Himalayas, is where I grew up. Life was going well until one day when I lost my father in a car accident. I was 17 and was left with my mother, sister 14 yrs of age and brother 9yrs. The loss is never easy; All four of us were devastated and shaken to our core. Our mother devoted the rest of her life in providing love, care, nurturing and a good education. Today we three siblings are doing well in our careers and have a good life.
I was fortunate and grateful to have a mother and loving siblings. Growing up and even now, I often think of children who have lost all their loved ones and I try to relate to their desolation and desperation…Children who don’t get to experience the unconditional love and support of a parent, the bond one shares with a sibling and precious memories with one’s family. It is for this reason, I have an innate desire and an untiring will to want to do something for these needy or orphaned children.
This is my first project and I am starting it in Shimla. It has been made possible by the support of “The Unforgotten” charity, a US registered non-profit organization that I am a member of; I will be supporting 3 orphanages that have a total of 145 children. The money collected will ALL go towards directly benefiting the children. All admin and travel costs are born by the members of the organization.
In February of 2018, I plan to visit India, at my own expense and own time and will give these gifts to the orphans personally. I plan to capture those moments on camera and will share it with you via Facebook
(www.facebook.com/unforgottenfund), Twitter (@unforgottenfund), and Instagram (@unforgottenfund), as well as through our website (http://unforgotten.org).
